Valdez Valdez, a postcard-pretty town ringed by small mountains, is also the northernmost ice-free harbor in the United States, which makes it the ideal location for the southern terminus of the Alaska Pipeline.  Situated in a picturesque 11-mile-long fjord across from the Valdez town site, the Alyeska Marine Terminal offers the opportunity to view the final stage of the most ambitious and expensive construction project ever undertaken by private enterprise.  Traversing 800 miles of Alaskan wilderness, the pipeline concludes at the Valdez terminal, where Alaska's crude oil is trasferred to tankers for shipment to the Lower 48.  Observe the oil storage tank farm tanker berths, the ballast treatment facility, and, possibly, a giant tanker taking on a cargo of crude oil.  Your driver/guide will give you an informative, non-technical explanation of the entire pipeline operation.
Please note: A driver's licence or picture identification may be required by pipeline security for entry into the terminal facility.

Many other land tours are also available in and around Valdez, from the Old Valez town site, completely destroyed in the 1964 earthquake, to Horserail and Bridal Veil Falls, Thompson Pass, Worthington Glacier, and the Soloman Gulch Fish Hatchery.
